Common Stomach Symptoms That May Require Immediate Attention

Stomach problems are a nuisance, but there are times when they are serious enough that you may need to visit an urgent care center. While the causes of most stomach problems are fairly easy to determine and are not serious, there are some times when the pain may require immediate medical attention. Here are some common causes of stomach pain and when you should see a doctor.

Nausea

It is normal to be nauseous now and then, especially if you've eaten something that doesn't agree with you. Food allergies and hormones also frequently cause nausea. However, nausea accompanied by a fever may indicate gastroenteritis, commonly known as the stomach flu. Motion sickness and excessive alcohol consumption are also common causes. If your vomiting does not subside after a few days, or if you show signs of dehydration, then see a doctor.

Dull Aches

A dull ache in the lower part of the abdomen may indicate bladder issues or, if you are female, menstrual cramps. A dull, constant pain in the center of the abdomen could signal issues with your pancreas. Swelling in the intestinal tract can cause a dull ache anywhere in the abdominal cavity and is often a sign of chronic bowel issues such as irritable bowel syndrome. See your doctor if the pains are constant or don't go away with painkillers or stomach aids.

Sudden, Sharp Pain

Sudden, sharp pains often cause concern, especially if they are severe. In many cases, the sharp pain may only be trapped gas. This pain will eventually subside over a short period of time or after a bowel movement. Sudden pain that radiates from the navel area round to your right side may indicate appendicitis, which is an emergency. Some types of sharp pains are signs of gallstones or bladder stones which also need immediate attention.

All-Over Aches

Aches that are hard to pinpoint except that they are located within the abdominal area may could be a sign of an intestinal issue. All-over aches are often accompanied with excessive gas and bloating. Celiac disease and spastic colon are examples of issues that cause these symptoms. If you haven't had a bowel movement for more than a few days, or if you have a hard time passing gas, then you could have a blocked intestinal tract and should seek immediate treatment.

Any time you have any stomach pain or discomfort accompanied by a high fever or excessive vomiting, you should consult a doctor. If you feel that your situation is immediately life threatening, then you should call an ambulance and visit an emergency room. Otherwise, if you still feel that your situation needs immediate attention but is not an emergency, and your regular doctor is not available, then visit an urgent care clinic for an examination.
